School Trip & Group Educational Information

Introduction for school trips and educational visits

Teachers planning a school trip might want to consider the Bank of England Museum.  Exhibits, interactive displays and activity sheets teach young people the story of the Bank from its foundation in 1694 to its role today.

Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?

It is never too soon to learn about the value of money. A visit to the Bank of England Museum can be combined with one of the Bank’s presentations in the Museum cinema, all of which can be adapted to suit the age, knowledge and ability of the group.

Presentations are free of charge but their popularity means they must be booked in advance (020 7601 3833/3591/3866).

What size groups do they cater for?

Minimum of 15, maximum of 50 people.

What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit?

Teaching Resources -

Pounds & Pence is a resource for 9 – 11 year olds on money and prices.  It includes material on the history and purpose of money, banknotes and their features, why prices change and how prices are kept stable.  This presentation can also be adapted to suit younger children but please ring to discuss your group’s needs.

Made of Money is a guide to the economy for 14 − 16 year olds.  It describes what the economy is, how it works and its everyday relevance to them, as well as how the economy is kept on track.  Students will easily relate the ideas in both resources to their own experiences.  The topics are explained in a simple and engaging way using examples from everyday life.  The materials form ready-made lessons based on information and activity cards, teachers’ notes and a DVD/video.

Our presentations can also be adapted to suit special needs groups. Please ring to discuss your presentation before booking.

Activity sheets are available from the museum information desk for all ages. These can be downloaded from our website in advance www.bankofengland.co.uk/museum

Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copy write restrictions?

Photography, Video and Audio is not allowed in the museum or cinema.

How do you arrange a risk assessment?

We do not provide risk assessments although teachers are very welcome to inspect the Museum during normal working hours. As a general guideline, the Health, Safety & Fire Manager has issued the following statement:-

'There are no activities that the children will be engaging in that require risk assessment under the statutory provisions.  The Bank are fully compliant with all health and safety legislation.'

Do you have first aid on site?

Yes, our Security Force are all trained in first aid and we do have a Medical Department which is open during normal visiting hours.

What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits?

The Bank of England Museum has a small gift shop, gifts are available from 50p. Eating and drinking is not allowed in the Museum.

Are there disabled facilities?

The Museum welcomes disabled visitors and tries to overcome the limitations of a historic building that does not provide easy access for people with disabilities.

Portable ramps give wheelchair access to all areas of the Museum including the toilet for disabled visitors. There is a hearing loop for use in the cinema. The main interactive video display has optional sub-titles.

Coaches and cars can stop briefly to set down and pick up outside the entrance to the Museum.

We would be grateful if visitors in wheelchairs could notify us in advance if they intend to visit the Museum so that we can set up the wheelchair ramps ahead of their arrival.

For further information and to notify us of your visit, please telephone the Education & Museum Group + 44 (0)20 7601 5545.
