Woking , Surrey, GU21 4AA England WEBSITE LINK: http://www.thelightbox.org.uk CONTACT: 01483 737800 School Trip & Group Educational Information Introduction for school trips and educational visits The Lightbox has two temporary exhibition galleries which host a range of exhibitions that include contemporary art from local and nationally famous artists, and loans from major museums and galleries in the UK and overseas. It is also home to Woking's Story, an interactive museum of the town's history from the 19th Century to the present day. Here you can listen to people’s memories of life in Woking and watch historic films. Many of the exhibitions incorporate hands on interactives. There is also a purpose built Education Studio for creative workshop activities. The Lightbox’s award winning education team has developed a range of activity sessions, offering school groups of all ages the opportunity to explore our galleries and take part in hands-on creative workshops. Self guided school visits are also welcome. Visitors with disabilities will find the building easy to use. It has been designed to be one of the most accessible cultural venues in the South East. Feel free to contact us for more details about disabled access to The Lightbox. Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits? The Lightbox welcomes bookings from school groups to visit Woking’s Story or any of the temporary exhibitions in the Main Gallery. School groups can come on self-guided visits or take part in Lightbox led activity sessions. The Lightbox has been running award-winning education programmes since 1997. We work with artists, schools and community groups to provide inspiring creative activities for all ages and abilities. School groups booked to come on Lightbox led activity workshops get to take part in hands-on making activities and all students take what they have made back to school with them. What does a typical school trip or educational visit include? The typical education visit to The Lightbox involves a guided gallery session and a hands-on workshop in the Education Studio. The gallery part of the visit includes a guided tour of the gallery as well as specially planned gallery based activities. The workshop sessions consist of a hands-on activity where students get to work with materials to create something related to their visit to the gallery. All students take what they make back to school with them. Activity sessions last approximately two hours each. Topics that can be supported by a visit to The Lightbox include: Tudors in Woking, World War II in Woking, art and design, textiles, local history. What size groups do they cater for? We are able to take a maximum of 30 students per workshop session and can run two workshop sessions at once. What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit? The Lightbox provides teachers’ packs for Woking’s Story and temporary exhibitions in the Main Gallery. We are able to support students of all ages from Key Stage 1 up to adult learners. Samples can be provided on request. Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copy write restrictions? Children are allowed to take photos in the Education Studio, but unfortunately they are usually not allowed to take photos in the galleries due to copyright restrictions. Teachers can pre-visit any ticketed exhibition (there are approximately 2 ticketed exhibition a year) for free by filling in a brief form at Reception. We only provide risk assessments for the workshop activity but not the whole trip. Teachers are responsible for making their own risk assessments for the whole visit.
