Newgale YMCA Outdoor Education Centre is a not for profit organisation and works with children and young people throughout the UK to provide non formal educational and personal development opportunities. The YMCA is The Worlds oldest international charity, operating in 124 countries world wide. As Outdoor Educators we believe that taking young people out of their normal environment to do outdoor activities offers them many benefits, some of which include: the chance to learn new skills, face new challenges, overcome barriers to learning, work with friends and teachers outside of a formal setting, and much more! The philosophy of our organisation works to develop three areas within the scope of personal development agenda, Relationships to others, Relationships to self, and Relationship to the environment. Our senior staff are trained in Choice Theory Psychology, an established methodology for facilitating positive outcomes. At Newgale YMCA we aim to: • Promote the value of the outdoors as a place for healthy exercise, participation, team-work, problem-solving, overcoming barriers to learning and having fun • Teach young people how to manage & challenge risk for themselves in everyday situations so they become confident, capable young people • Add value to classroom learning • Make a positive difference to the lives of young people What does a typical school trip or educational visit include? We have designed courses to meet the specific needs of young people. The curriculum for which is detailed below. We are also able to offer tailor made courses to meet the needs of individuals and groups. This could be across the board of outdoor activity from Duke of Edinburgh Award Expedition Training to courses designed to meet the needs of young people in the work place. We are also able to deliver training and assessment for the National Governing Body for mountain biking through the SMBLA. Programmes: Independent Living 16yrs+ 5 Day Programme This course is designed to look at the individual skills required for a young person to successfully live independently. The group will be expected to prepare meals, set goals, action plan, communicate effectively and make positive choices with consequential thinking. Throughout the course learning will be facilitated by our highly experienced staff team making it relevant to every day life and the real challenges young people face in our society today. Confidence Building All Ages 3 or 5 Day Programme This course does what it says on the tin. Throughout the programme the group will look at the theory of comfort zones and personal challenge as well as support and encouragement from within a team. Each individual will be given the opportunity to achieve success and to recognise the skills they already have as well as learn new things. Every participant will leave the programme with a certificate to celebrate their many achievements and with a greater sense of self worth. John Muir Award All Ages 5 Day Programme This week takes the young people on a journey of discovery looking at the environment around them and some of the ways they can be involved in caring for it. Whilst going out in the great outdoors they will learn about the sea shore and its many inhabitants along with the bird life and flora which is abundant here in the UKs only Coastal National Park. They will leave not just having had an amazing experience but also with an increased knowledge about the natural world plus the achievement of the John Muir Discovery Award. Team Building All Ages 3 or 5 Day Programme This programme is aimed specifically at groups who either already work together on a regular basis such as a youth group or staff team as well as those who are looking to work together in the future, perhaps towards a shared goal. The course will progress from basic level team challenges through to more consequential and adventurous tasks. Our experienced professionals will pitch the challenges appropriately to match the groups’ ability and facilitate the learning, making it relevant to their particular background or future aims. Leadership 14yrs+ 3 or 5 Day Programme The clue is in the name! Whatever your situation, Dof E training, sports team captain, staff team supervisor or just about to start employment, leadership is an essential quality. Our professionals will match the programme to the context of your group, looking at what makes a good leader, identifying what skills they already have relevant to leadership and finally learning something new to help them become even more confident and effective in the future.. Actions For Change 16yrs+ 5 Day Programme This unique programme focuses on behavioural choices using the basis of ‘Reality Therapy’ and ‘Choice Theory’. This course is relevant to young people who want to make positive changes in their lives yet lack the confidence and the tools to make those changes happen. The course will begin by challenging existing behaviour and looking to the reasons behind it along with the consequences it brings. Young people will then work towards building a tool box for the future empowering themselves with different choices and the understanding that they are in control. Finally the course will end with an action planning session to be continued with the support of youth or social workers back in their home environment. This is not a course for the unprepared or unwilling, only the young people can make this programme a success. Adventure Any Age 3 or 5 Day Programme High challenge, high adventure and lots of fun makes this a course to bring a smile to everyone’s face. The group will begin by taking on some team challenges. This will make sure they know a little more about each other whilst learning some essential skills that will be the key to success. As things progress these skills will be developed in ever more testing environments, whether at height or in the sea. Guaranteed to have you buzzing by the end, this course offers a vast range of activities including an overnight experience.
