School Trip & Group Educational Information Introduction for school trips and educational visits Gilfach Wen Barn is a newly converted 4 star bunkhouse on a working farm adjacent to Brechfa Forest, the largest man made forest in Europe. We provide an ideal base for children of all ages to enjoy activities in Carmarthenshire and the Brecon Beacons National Park. Rather than offering a fixed price package we offer assistance to develop a tailored package which meets your needs and budget. Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?
The accommodation in a converted stone barn includes The needs of disabled guests have been catered for by providing a downstairs bedroom, a downstairs bathroom of a wet room design, ensuring all areas can be accessed by a wheelchair and incorporating a ramp into the garden. We can make space available on the farm for team building or sports activities. (The nearest house other than the farm house is 4 fields away, and the barn is fully insulated with good double-glazing. You do not have to worry about disturbing the neighbours.)
There is unlimited access to the adjoining forest for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. What does a typical school trip or educational visit include? Each group leader is helped through providing local contacts to develop a package of activities to meet their own group’s needs and budget. Some groups use the accommodation as just a base and spend each day with a different activity provider, others use the accommodation for workshops. What size groups do they cater for? There are a total of 21 beds, in 7 bedrooms. A double room, two bedrooms with 2 beds, and four bedrooms with 4 beds. What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit? We provide a list of activity providers with contact details including links to their websites. I am happy to share my local knowledge, or research any special needs of a group to meet their curriculum or key stages requirements, including producing any workbooks needed. An orienteering quiz around the farm and leaflets on circular walks in the local area are also available. Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copy write restrictions? There is no problem with children taking photos, video or audio. How do you arrange a risk assessment? We provide a copy of a generic risk assessment to help in the generation of your own risk assessment, and are happy to arrange for appointments for any group leader. Gilfach Wen Barn has comprehensive public liability insurance and has been graded as walker and cyclist friendly by Visit Wales. An accident book is kept in the building along with a basic first aid kit. What are the contact details for their education officer?
Jillina Gardiner lives on site and is the principle contact for all enquiries and feedback. The contact list for the activities includes details of the educational officer at each activity. This depends on the options chosen for the activities. The accommodation on its own is £350 per night for sole use - which works out at less than £17 per person per night. This is for self catering with the visitors bringing sleeping bags. A local catering company would be happy to provide sample menus and quote for a catered option. Bedding can be provided for an additional fee of £105 per night. Is specific clothing required? This depends on the options chosen for the activities. Do you have first aid on site? The group will need to bring a qualified first aider. What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits? There is plenty of space to eat a packed lunch. The nearest village is a mile away, this does have a shop. Group leaders of older children find it helpful that the nearest public house is over 2 miles away. Are there disabled facilities?
