School Trip & Educational Visit Information

The Ranch Outdoor Discovery Centre exists to offer young people opportunities for exciting residential experiences all year round in the heart of  Snowdonia  - with an emphasis on personal discovery, education, safety and fun. The Ranch is owned and operated by a youth charity and therefore is not focused primarily on commercial objectives.

Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?

A unique mix of mountain and marine environments coupled with modern, comfy accommodation, a stunning location and an innovative range of outdoor activities make The Ranch a very special place for school residentials. Create your own unique activity package choosing from nearly thirty different instructed activities and educational visits which take place both within our twelve acre grounds or on the nearby mountains, beaches and forests of Snowdonia.

What size groups do they cater for?

Groups of up to 40 can be accommodated in the following bedroom sizes – 8 x 4 bed, 2 x3 bed and I x 2 bed – all bedrooms are en-suite and all meals and bedding are provided.

What can they provide you with to support you?

A full information pack is available complete with details of activities, outside attractions and educational visits in the National Park. Work sheets on Harlech Castle, for example, can also be supplied.

How do you book a risk assessment?

The Ranch is licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Service (formerly Adventure Activities Licensing Authority  - A.A.L.A.) for Hill Walking and Mountaineering (summer conditions only). In accordance with the advice of A.A.L.S., we provide a copy of our 'Risk Management Summary' free of charge upon request. If, in addition to this, individual activity risk assessments are required then we now make a £30.00 administration fee for providing this information in order to help off-set the endlessly spiralling costs of 'Health & Safety' documentation.

What are the contact details for their education officer?

Not as such, but any questions regarding educational visits can be addressed to Andy Whittaker, Head of Centre at The Ranch ODC

What does it cost?

For schools, we offer one free teacher place with each ten paying group members – i.e. each 11th place is free. The standard Monday to Friday booking (2008) is charged at £125,00 + VAT per person (VAT is of course reclaimable by school groups). This is based on a minimum group size of 30 in June, July & August and 20 in all other months. There are discounts for out of season weeks from October through to March inclusive. Activities are charged separately but, as a rough guide, a week's activity program can be provided for a cost of anything between £30.00 to £80.00+VAT per person depending on the particular activities chosen.

Is specific clothing required?

Not usually but, if required, we can supply walking boots and waterproofs although there a small hire charge for this service. We do provide a full 'suggested' kit list and also specify clothing requirements for certain activities (for more information on this see the 'downloads' link on The Ranch pages of the website www.actioncentres.co.uk )

Do you have first aid on site?

All our activity staff possess a minimum of an appointed person first aid qualification. In addition, other on site staff possess higher level First Aid qualifications.

What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits?

Facilities on site include, free 24 hour tea & coffee, 'home cooked' style food, games room with pool and table tennis, outside sports area with high net fencing and re-bound walls plus flood lighting available (at small additional cost), drying room, walking boots and waterproof hire, wi-fi hotspots, payphone, small shop (open in the evening for 15 to 20 minutes selling various chocolate bars, cold fruit juice drinks and postcards etc., 12 acres of secluded and quite heavily wooded hillside with panoramic views over Cardigan Bay from the Llyen Peninsular to the Pembrokeshire coast on clear days. In addition, activities available on site include a Challenge Course, Archery Range and Orienteering Course. A DVD 'Movie Time' projector is also available for use at a small additional charge plus an overhead projector is available for use at no extra charge. Senior Ranch staff are on site at all times.

Are there disabled facilities?

Our disabled facilities are fairly limited – we do not specialise in accommodation for physically disabled people. All the main rooms are on ground floor level plus there are two ground floor bedrooms one of which has a 'disabled' en suite shower room/toilet.
