School Trip & Group Educational Information

Welcoming audiences averaging almost 500,000 per year, Birmingham Hippodrome can lay claim to the highest regular annual attendance of any single theatre in the country. The city centre venue, which is celebrating the 5th anniversary of its re-launch following its award-winning £35m redevelopment, has enjoyed seeing ever-increasing numbers of people return over the last few years and is drawing audiences from an increasingly broad geographical and socio-demographic spread.

Many new people are enjoying some of the finest productions in the world alongside long-standing supporters, with up to half the audience enjoying a show at the Hippodrome for the very first time.

"Stunning, full-sized West End quality in Birmingham."
Ed Doolan, BBC Radio WM

Support for Primary Schools

We aim to support all primary schools in the West Midlands area and beyond, with the provision of educational related activities which will enhance and augment the school curriculum. We can do this in a number of ways tailored to each school’s own particular needs.

These can take the form of:

• Bespoke non-show specific workshops
• Backstage tours for Foundation
• Basic Careers and employment talks

We can apply such subjects as: Science; Design and Technology; Literacy and Numeracy; Art and History and of course Dance and Drama, to all aspects of theatre and theatrical productions for all age ranges from Foundation to Keystage 2 plus a range of cross curriculum activities.

We have already run many such courses which have been individually designed for particular schools but we are very keen to extend our repertoire and are always looking for a new project to get our teeth into!

Support for Secondary Schools

Birmingham Hippodrome is committed to forging relationships with secondary schools in the West Midlands and surrounding areas and developing the next generation of artists and audiences. Because of this, we positively encourage schools and young people to develop an appreciation and understanding of theatre. This can be through a wide range of workshops and projects, led by our visiting companies or skilled freelance practitioners.

These projects draw on our diverse and eclectic theatre programme offering West End musicals, International dance, classical ballet and world class opera and include in-school workshops, backstage tours and theatre visits. By enhancing students enjoyment of all performances and appreciation for the performer, we hope to develop a greater awareness of theatre and their role as an audience member.

Non-specific show related workshops and backstage tours

As a theatre, we consider ourselves to be a total and complete resource for schools, offering workshops over a comprehensive subject area including such curriculum areas as Dance, Drama, English, Travel and Tourism and Business Studies at all levels including: GCSE, ‘A/S’ & ‘A’ level and BTEC diploma courses.

Playtime sessions offer families the chance to play together! It is a wonderful opportunity to take a bit of time out of the usual hussle and bussle of life, and spend some quality time with your family, doing more than just watching the telly! For an hour or more, you will join in activities designed to stimulate your imagination and unleash everyone's creativity! Playtime sessions are designed for everyone to enjoy - age is immaterial... we cater for children of all ages - parents, grandparents and great grandparents are all welcome.

The sessions will happen just before the show - so you can come earlier - avoid the traffic and let your children feel more comfortable in the theatre. All sessions relate to the show you will be seeing (or have seen) so that your visit to the theatre is a more magical and unforgettable experience. In the past we have made magic memory boxes, told stories, created masks, invented magical machines and sang songs and much much more.
