School Trip & Group Educational Information

Built in c1600, Moseley Old Hall not only gives a snapshot of what life was like in Tudor times, but is also the location of one of the most exciting and romantic stories in later English history.  This is the house where the young King Charles II hid after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651 – a hunted man with a price on his head.  Hands-on activities, story-telling and artefact handling are all used to bring both the Tudor and Stuart period to life.

Education visits take place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from March – October. A variety of interactive sessions are available, and we are happy to tailor a visit to meet your needs.

Tudor life
Discover what life was like in a 17th century country house, by taking part in a variety of household tasks- spinning, baking, setting the table or considering Tudor hygiene and cures and making pot pourri and a pomander. Children can then find out about pastimes such as dancing and music, play with Tudor toys and games or try their hand at calligraphy.
Most sessions are led by costumed guides. On Living History visits children and staff are invited to wear period costume and activities are delivered ‘as if’ in the past.

The Escape of Charles II
In 1651, the young King Charles II hid at Moseley Old Hall following his defeat at the Battle of Worcester. Visitors enter the house through the same door used by Charles and see the bed where he slept and the priest hole in which he hid from Cromwell’s soldiers. The story of the escape is brought to life with storytelling, when children have the opportunity to dress up and take
the roles of characters in the story. Children have the chance to explore military life of the
time and take part in pike drill.
