How can Camboats – Boat Trips aboard Rosie Help School Trips and Educational Visits?

Rosie is a 50ft open sided narrowboat cruising on the River Cam and Gt Ouse between Cambridge city and Ely waterfront.

Rosie’s  home mooring is the Plough at Fen Ditton on the outskirts of the city just off the A14. Pickup points are the plough, The Penny Ferry at Chesterton, Fort St George, Midsummer Common and  Jesus lock (below the lock in the summer and above the lock in the winter.

Until  31 March Rosie can cruise the historic ‘Backs’ taking in Magdalene, St Johns, Trinity, Clare, Kings and Queens College, including Maudlin, Bridge of sighs, Mathematical and Silver St bridges. Public  or group cruises take approx 40 minutes and include a commentary with drinks and snacks bought from our tiny galley. Public prices are £4 adult £2.50 children. Child lifejackets, Swan and Duck food plus toilet available.

Public trips each Sunday 11am from Lock running approx every hour till 16.00.

Summer  cruises:  Public boarding from just below Jesus lock 40 minute cruise to riverside and return past university boat houses to wildlife area with nesting Swans, Moorhen and Kingfishers. April May 08 price still at £4 per head.

Group cruises all year round
Group cruises:
Cruise from your choice of departure point, customised to your group whether  a child’s pirate picnic with treasure hunt or leisurely cruise down river with family and friends stop for a pub meal, picnic in water meadows or tea and biscuits on board.  One hour afternoon or evening cruises with tea and biscuits is £60 with a group of 20 this works out at just £3 a head.

Chat to Liz and customise a cruise to suit you from an hour to a full day cruise exploring the Cam and Gt Ouse rates start at  £60 an hour (this is for the whole boat hire) Rosie is licensed to carry up to 32 passengers. Prices quoted include commentary and  hot drinks. Decorations and catering can be arranged. A toilet is on board.

Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?

Rosie is the only open sided passenger boat on the Cam, Rosie has in her crew at least 1 teacher on board who will tailor the cruise commentary to the age, themes and key stages of the children. Children and adults will have a complimentary hot/cold drink and biscuit plus Duck food

What does a typical school trip or educational visit include?

All topics covered whether transport, rivers, history, wildlife or just messing about on the river.  Winter options include cruising the ‘Backs’ this is upriver and includes Trinity and Kings college, mathematical bridge, bridge of sighs. Loads of history plus location of ‘Hogwarts’ for the film of Harry Potter.

What size groups do they cater for?

Rosie is licensed to carry 32 passengers, although 28 is a good maximum.

What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit?

They can provide material including pictures, worksheets, quiz’s etc

Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copy write restrictions?

Yes – there are no restrictions.

Safety and how to arrange risk assessments?

Each child is fitted with a sized lifejacket and a short safety talk. A risk assessment can be provided or school staff is more than welcome to pre visit the boat and look at the safety aspects. Rosie is licensed by the Maritime Coastguard Agency each year do stringent safety checks we are also on the Cambridge county schools register as an approved venue for primary and secondary pupils.

What does it cost?

Prices for schools are discounted at £60 an hour this works out at £2 per passenger.

Is specific clothing required?

Dress for a walk in the country with layers and non slip flat shoes if possible.

Do they have first aid on site?

Crew members have up to date certificates in Emergency First Aid through St Johns plus a comprehensive First Aid Kit.

What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits?

They have a tiny galley that can provide hot/cold drinks with kitkats and crisps.
Everyone is welcome to bring on their packed lunches and eat them, they can provide a tarpaulin if you would like to picnic ashore. They usually provide children with hot chocolate in the winter and squash in the summer plus a ‘hobnob’ biscuit or fruit. 
With requests they can provide some small items for children to buy £1 each would be adequate for these. There is a toilet on board and hand washing facilities

Are there disabled facilities?

The mooring access needs to be arranged in advance then Rosie has broad shallow steps into boat with 2 integral hand rails. We can accommodate regular wheelchairs provided the child can be helped aboard out of the wheelchair then transferred back into it once aboard.
