School Trip & Group Educational Information.

Introduction for school trips and educational visits.

Sewerby Hall is situated 2 miles north of the seaside resort of Bridlington, on the East Yorkshire coast. The grade I listed country house is set in 50 acres of landscaped gardens in a cliff top location on the outskirts of Sewerby village. A firm favorite with school-trip organizers, we accommodate over 200 school visits every year.

Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?

Enjoy the fascinating history of the Hall, the fun-filled children’s zoo, the award winning picnic areas and the exciting kiddies play area. Don’t forget to stroll through the enchanting gardens and grounds followed by a round on the putting green. Two hundred yards from the cliff edge – a ten minute walk to the beach and rock pools.

What does a typical school trip or educational visit include?

We allow our school visits free roam of the Estate and Hall. Our zoo has learning packs available for teachers with an educational pack for the Hall available in 2010. Key stages 1-3.

Also new in 2010 is our Orienteering course a fun way of exploring all corners of the Estate.

What size groups do they cater for?

Any size, although all school visits must first fill in and send a completed booking form available to download from our website. Tours and talks are available if staff are on-site at the time. Visits are normally on a first-come, first-served basis as our car park can accept limited numbers of coaches. It is normally best to call or email first to check availability.

What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit?

Our science and nature downloads are freely available from our website. Orienteering packs are priced per child but a single sample can be bought by teachers to ascertain suitability.

Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copyright restrictions?

Visitors are not allowed to take pictures within the Hall but can do so freely elsewhere. Commercial photography of any kind is not allowed without prior permission.

How do you arrange a risk assessment?

We have up to date Risk Assessments for all aspects of the visits. We also allow up to two teachers to come on a familiarization visit to assess the site for themselves. This visit is free of charge but must be organized well in advance.

What are the contact details for their education officer?

Janice Smith is the curator of the museum department here. She can be contacted via the normal channels.

What does it cost?

The admission costs are: £4.30 for adults, £3.50 for over 60’s, £2.30 for children (aged 3-15). Coach drivers enter free. Between the 26th of July and the 6th of September all admission prices increase by 50p. Groups of 20 or more paying visitors are eligible for a 50% discount.

Our Landtrain runs between Sewerby Hall and Bridlington and is always a hit with the youngsters. There are two stops: one near the beach and one in the town centre. Prices start as little as £0.90 depending on the journey. Pre-booking is essential but this service cannot be guaranteed as it is in use by the general public.

Is specific clothing required?

Only the weather dictates the clothing but sturdy walking shoes are advisable.

Do you have first aid on site?

Groups will need to bring their own first-aider.

What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits?

Our award-winning Tea Rooms are open all year round serving snacks and light meals. The Grab and go quick snack service is available during peak times. Marquee hire is available free of charge for half an hour but is subject to weather conditions and booked out on a first-come, first –served basis. There are numerous picnic tables and other seating scattered around the Estate.

Are there disabled facilities?

The Hall and Estate are disabled friendly. There are steps around the woodland walk and some surfaces are covered in bark chippings. Disabled access to the Hall is via a ramp near the Estate Office and there is a lift to all floors. Motorized buggies are not permitted in the Hall due to conservation issues. We have a limited number of wheelchairs available. Due to Health and Safety reasons, prams and pushchairs are not allowed within the Hall but we do have a secure storage area for them. We have disabled toilets in the Hall and the Courtyard.
