School Trip & Group Educational Information

Introduction for school trips and educational visits

Black Hart Entertainment run historical and children’s walks around Edinburgh’s stunning Old Town – as well as operating the world famous City of the Dead Ghost walk.

Our tours are researched and designed by a historical writer and award winning children’s author J A Henderson and conducted by professional entertainers, actors and historians. We tailor our walks to each individual group and have exclusive access to some of the most fascinating parts of Edinburgh not open to the general public. These include parts of the legendary Underground City and the Covenanters Prison.

Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?

For entertainment, education and sheer spectacle, nothing matches Edinburgh’s ancient and historic Old Town. A World Heritage site in the UNESCO City of Literature, it has inspired writers, artists and scientists for centuries.

We have over ten years experience in making education fun and try to make our stories a little bit out of the ordinary. Our tours cover such diverse topics as the Edinburgh origins of Harry Potter, Frankenstein, Evolutionary Theory and Christmas celebrations!

Black Hart Entertainment is owned and run by the historian and children’s author J A Henderson – who also designs the tours. He has written several non-fiction and children’s fantasy books as Jan-Andrew Henderson, including:

The Town Below the Ground: Edinburgh’s Legendary Underground City
(‘Thoroughly recommended’ – Radio Scotland)

The Emperor’s New Kilt: The Two Secret Histories of Scotland
(‘Amazing’ – Daily Record)

He now writes novels for older children under the name J A Henderson (Bunker 10, Crash, Colony). His last two books have been shortlisted for a total of eight literary awards and he is the winner of the 2008 Royal Mail Award for Children’s Literature.

What does a typical school trip or educational visit include?

We tailor the visits to each group but our highlights can include:

The Underground City.

These subterranean chambers were hidden for centuries before being recently rediscovered – dark and twisted vaults where the poorest sections of the population once lived in misery.

The Covenanters Prison.

Arguably the world’s first concentration camp, the Covenanters Prison in Greyfriars Graveyard was at the centre of the country’s most turbulent historical period – beginning with the arrival of Mary Queen of Scots and ending with the restoration of the monarchy after the English Civil War.

What size groups do they cater for?

From 10 - 100.

What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit?

We have children’s work sheets and are currently in the process of developing them to specific sections of the curriculum.

Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copyright restrictions?

Very happy and there are no copyright restrictions.

How do you arrange a risk assessment?

We can provide risk assessment in advance.

What are the contact details for their education officer?

Sarah Wilson on 0131 225 9044 and through www.blackhart.uk.com.

What does it cost?

Private Tours. Groups of less than 25 cost a flat rate of £125 per tour.  For groups over 25 the rate is £5.00per child and teachers go free.

Is specific clothing required?

Wouldn’t recommend stilettos!

Do you have first aid on site?

We have a first Aid kit but a first aider would have to be supplied by the school.

What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits?

We have our own gift shop which has a range of gifts from inexpensive souvenirs to more expensive items. And because our tours traverse the Royal Mile there are ample dining areas, café’s, toilets and shops.

Are there disabled facilities?

The tours enter listed buildings which are not suitable for disabled children.  We can, however conduct tours which avoid these buildings.
